Texas River School

Texas River School, Austin's only water-based environmental leadership program for at-risk youth, has inspired more than 4,000 participants since its creation 10 years ago. In 1991, TRS Founder and Executive Director Joe Kendall launched The Chautauqua Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) to protect Texas’ rivers and streams; he created the Texas River School when he saw the need to combine outdoor education with nutrition and health information. As we celebrate our 10th year, the goal is to put 400 elementary students on the water in 2008, and to move closer to our long-term goal of establishing an overnight canoeing camp on our riverfront property five miles down from Austin on the Colorado River.
